How to Stay Warm & Safe While Waiting for Furnace Repair

It’s never convenient to deal with a furnace breakdown that leaves you without heat. Depending on when the breakdown happens and how busy our team is with similar calls, you may be without heat for a little while until we can visit your home for a service appointment.

It’s better to be prepared in advance just in case your furnace breaks so that you can stay warm while you wait for service. If you have been searching for “furnace repair near me” because your furnace is already broken down, you’re in the right place. Just give our team a call, and we will schedule you with the soonest appointment we have available. You can also keep reading to learn more about how to stay warm while you wait for furnace repair.

Call for Service

This may seem obvious, but the first thing you want to do during a heater breakdown is call for service. You may be tempted to try tweaking the system yourself or hoping that your heater will turn back on shortly. It’s better to go ahead and call to schedule a service appointment rather than putting it off. This is a busy time of year for our team and all the other HVAC technicians in the area. Putting off a call for service could mean that you’re waiting even longer without heat.

Use Space Heaters

A great way to stay warm while your central heater is off is by using space heaters. We do have some safety tips to recommend. Only use space heaters in a room that you are currently occupying. Don’t leave space heaters unattended for longer than a couple of minutes while they are plugged in and turned on.

When you plug a space heater in, plug it directly into the wall outlet. Do not use power strips or any sort of adapter to plug in a heater. You should also only plug a single heater into any one outlet in your home. Be sure to maintain at least a few feet of space around any heater that you plug in. This helps to reduce the chance of a fire hazard because your heater has maximum room for airflow.

Maximize Heat

During the day when it is sunny outside, you can open curtains and blinds to allow the heat from the sun into your home. This can help your home feel more comfortable during the daytime hours without relying on extra portable heaters quite as much.

You can also utilize jackets and blankets as a way to stay warm. Bundle up with your family and snuggle on the couch or use extra blankets when it is bedtime. You can even purchase electric blankets that plug into the wall and heat up. But just like portable heaters, we encourage you to only have these blankets plugged in and turned on when you are actively using them.
